A lot of people ask me how I manage having to balance my career and cheer trainings. I, for one, am no stranger to having packed schedules. I spent a good six years of my adolescence training with the combined schools, and then at a national level – which refers to training six days a week, twice on Saturdays. I have meals, I change and I sleep in my mom’s car during the 20 mins transport between school and training. I do my homework right after they are issued, and I finish my compositions for the night. I have tuition, I don’t watch TV and I almost never went to catch a summer blockbuster. I take classical piano lessons (and I still do), because it is one of two things which I love and chose to do for myself; the other being gymnastics.

Nothing’s changed since then, except that when I work, I almost never have time for lunch, and that on training days, dinner is out of the question. It turns out that I need 32 hours a day if I did everything I need to do on a daily basis, and that is if I slept at 2am and woke up at 7am.

I usually tell them this:

“Once, there was a bus conductor, who was very rude to his passengers. One day, a beautiful young girl tried to board the bus, but he didn’t stop. Unfortunately, the beautiful young girl came under the bus and died on the spot. Angry passengers took the conductor to the police, who in turn, took him to court. The judge was not at all impressed with him, and sentenced him to capital punishment by electrocution.

The conductor was strapped to the chair in the electrocution chamber, and was subjected to a high voltage current. To everyone’s amazement, he survived. The judge decided to set him free, and he returned to his profession.

A few months later, a middle aged woman tried to board the bus, but he didn’t stop. Unfortunately this time, the woman also came under the bus and died on the spot. Again, the angry passengers took him to the police, who in turn, took him to court. The judge took one look at the conductor, and sentenced him to capital punishment by electrocution.

In the same electrocution chamber, the conductor was strapped to his chair, and subjected to a high voltage current. To everyone’s amazement, he survived again. The judge decided to set him free, and he returned to his profession.

A few more months passed when an elderly gentleman tried to board the bus. This time, the bus conductor, recalling the previous two incidents, stopped the bus. Unfortunately, the elderly gentleman slipped and died from a head injury. The angry passengers still took the bus conductor to the police, who in turn, took him to the same court. The judge, considering his track record, issued the same sentence and ruled in favor of the deceased elderly man.

After being strapped to the electric char, the high voltage current was subjected. This time, he died instantly!

Question is: Do you know why he survived the first two electrocutions, and only died on the third?

During the first two times, the conductor was a bad conductor.”

LOL. I don’t apologize for putting you through the bad humor. It was a necessary bad joke I recently received from a dear friend. Actually, what I really meant to say is: this is in fact how I get through my day. I like to look out for the subtle details in life; things that will nudge a perk-me-up into your day – like a bad joke (i THRIVE on lame jokes), a different perspective (I have plenty), and food porn (on foodwishes.com). Or not so subtle like that epic pic of Biyi in a microkini WHUDDUP!! I kid, I kid. I don’t ask to be happy, and I prefer not to be sad, but in either case, the last thing I would wanna do on a bad day is to lose my mind and make it worse. It's things like these that maintain a certain level of sanity in my brain, though I understand that most of you see the far more nonsensical me. I can’t stress enough on how important it is to me to remain focused, especially when I am most tired from consecutive 17 hour days, but I can leave you with this:

“Two peanuts were walking down a street. One was a salted.” – Tina Fey

I have found my secret to keeping staying focused in what I do and it has really helped me know what I want – not only in cheer, but in life. What’s yours?

How it all started!

Hi Guys! This will be my first blog post on WCT blog. I'm going to talk about how I got to know about cheerleading and people who helped me along. How it all started ? I was a ex-rower, and I quit because we feel the team wasn't united and not as motivated to train like before. Hence I left the team and went on to do endurance sports like running, etc.

Then when I was tending to the booth for the cca fair for my own cca, we saw the cheerleading interest group, and they went around asking for people who are interested to join. I was not interested at all, but my friend kept pestering me and a bunch of classmates to follow him so we went.

When I hear about the briefing regarding what we are going to do, I was not interested at all. Because I find it gay to be a cheerleader, I was not at all enthusiastic about it and my attendance for trainings were not consistent. I thought training might be very easy for me since I was a ex-rower and had endured hard trainings before so I did not really care much about training up myself as I thought cheerleading was gay and a sport that does not require much strength. Then after a period of time, we were informed of our change of coach, who were Ken and Kahau. When I first saw Ken, I knew he's someone I won't like and Kahau, a totally kind guy. So different from Ken. Hahaha. They told us that we were be going to try for nationals SNCC 2011 and I was not excited at all. At that point of time, I still don't find anything challenging about cheerleading that I wanna conquer it.

During SKM 2010, Ken asked me to go down at Ngee Ann City to catch the performance and see what cheerleading is like. After I watched performance from Legacy, Spintrix etc, I was getting somewhat interested because there were more stunts involved than I expected. Everything was amazing till I saw the guest performance by BU. It blew my mind away and sent chills down my spine! I found cheerleading freaking awesome and strong! After which, I started to get more interested in cheerleading. Ken and Kahau were very patient and kept teaching and guiding us, not forgetting the days we got scolded and f upside down by KEN MOST OF THE TIME. Hahaha!! Nevertheless, they still stood by the team and came up with great routines for the school!

During my time in Genesis, the person that inspired me the most and changed me both physically and mentally as well as my perception about cheerleading was Ken! Firstly, same height! And the things that he taught me was also what he himself did in routines, like shoulder stand and main base. Why I say that is because there was this one time he asked me "Do you want to cheer to win ?" I answered no because I was so used to losing in my life. After a pep talk by him, the winning attitude was drilled into me - it was a life changing moment. Physically, he forced me to gym and train the one major muscle group which I hate - my legs. If it weren't for him, I would never have trained my legs and be able to execute advanced stunts or have the strength to do it. Mentally, he trained me to have a stronger mind such that I won't collapsed under pressure and instead, convert all those stress into positive energy to improve myself in cheerleading. I have always aimed to do the things that he can do and lastly to be like him - to be in Wildcards, national champion team!

Most of the time when we have dinner or outings, I will always ask Ken about cheerleading and he always never refrain from telling me more about cheerleading no matter what the techniques are, the strength involved and how to do this and that. He also made myself realized that cheerleading is not only about strength and techniques, but also the trust between flyers, bases and the team because we are holding a life in our hands, not a dead weight. The base have to do everything to let the flyer feel safe and secure (security like how the parents will protect their child!).

So I thank KEN LIM BAY HONG for changing me so much both physically and mentally; It enabled me to move on in cheer and to get into such a great team! Not forgetting Kahau for being such a patient and kind coach and Isaac, who came at a later stage and also helped in guiding my group stunting techniques!

And my next aim is to be like Lim Hann Bin who have shown me that Wildcards acceleration can improve someone so much in such a short time frame! It gives me the faith that I can accomplish it if I put in my utmost effort and be hardworking! Thank you Wildcards for your patience and your constant encouragement to a freshie like me! Thank you people!

Team Lions 2011 group stunts co-ed (1st runner ups)

Flyers:

Background:

IFC's rules for group stunts requires a minimum of 2 basket tosses, and only one flyer to fly. In layman's terms, only one primary flyer can be used throughout the entire routine. The only situation where the 2nd flyer is allowed to fly is probably the finale, where typically a double cupie is being executed. For co-ed group stunts, 3 males and 2 females are allowed. Total routine time normally does not exceed 60 seconds.

Stunts executed in this routine:

Basket tosses : X-out full, Toe touch, Layout Kick full (total 3)

Partner stunts : Assisted cupie lib low pop over, assisted double cupie (total 2)

3-man stunts : Rewind, stretch-stretch - Full up 450 (total 2)

Dismounts : Front tuck X-out, Arabian (total 2)

Flexibility elements : Scorpion, Heel stretch (total 2)

Chaang's analysis:

To be even considered for a top 3 placing in co-ed group stunts, it seems that big basket tosses are needed to win. Difficult basket tosses are now becoming the basic requirement to be in top 3 spots. The top 3 placing for this year's SNCC Group Co-ed stunts is a very good example.

Dismounts are also important. Arabian dismounts are becoming popular, considering that it is a 2-element dismount.

Flexibility in this routine is limited, but is well compensated by Cynthia's ability to pull off big basket tosses.

Pace of this routine is rather slow, but it is my guess that the coach (Ong Wei Cheng) is going for a stable routine as a whole to reduce penalty deductions from wobbles/falls. This strategy is not wrong. Afterall if your stunts do not hit, they do not count.

Finale of the routine will set the standard for next year's SNCC. During SNCC 2011, we have seen most teams doing simultaneous toss/pitch up double cupies. Come next year, it is my guess that there will be a few teams hitting the first cupie first, then coming out with another method of hitting the 2nd cupie. At least with this video and considering Team Lion's ranking, it will be safe to say that we are allowed to hit one cupie at a time to end with a double cupie - hence clarifying the air of the ''only one flyer can fly'' rule.

*Note: The author has coached and choreographed a total of 4 National Level co-ed group stunts routine to date with the following results:
