With the end of Nationals, it marks the final year of Winston as our head coach, where he would be stepping down from his position to be a member. Here is a message dedicated to the team from him and we hope that through this, provide a closure to this season and move on forward for season 16/17.
Hi All,
Season 16/17 has ended and this time, we were unable to defend the gold medal in our division. We
were unable to put up an all-stunts-up routine on the mats and hence deservedly occupied the
bottom position of our division. It was a painful lesson for us to take home and definitely an
unfamiliar position for us. We like to congratulate the other teams for putting up a scintillating
performances at nationals and also commend them for the hard work they have put in as well.
This is my last year as a head coach and as I step down to be a member, I would just take this chance
to thank all the supporters and alumni members who have been with us throughout this season as
well as my 7 years in this team. We have not lived up to expectations this time but rest assured that
we would be working our hardest to take back that first place next year.
Secondly, I would like to thank my committee and Chaang for providing the much-needed support
that we had during the run into nationals. It was a season of many ups and downs and with your
help, we have managed to pull ourselves up towards nationals, only to fall at the final lap.
Lastly, I would like to thank the 24 members for finishing the season with me and the team. It is not
easy to last through a season and despite our many setbacks, you all have fought back and came
back stronger.
We cannot run away from the fact that this season was a disappointing one and it would exist in the
history of this team no matter how far we move forward. What we can change is how the future
would unfold for the team. We have been through good times, no doubt but this time, it be rough
times ahead and we have to ride it out as a team and I would like to take this chance to revisit values
of the team that made us who we are.
1) Accountability to your teammates
This is the biggest lesson that I have taken away from this team. If you want your team
mates to make the same sacrifices and work their hardest, we better jolly well be doing the
same. Be punctual at training, push aside everything and set this team as your priority. The
SOP was designed for a reason and our deviation from it at times this year can be attributed
as one of our major reasons for failure. Remember your team mates are all humans who
have a family, work, holiday plans and exams as well, so if they are willing to push them all
aside, we should do that too.
2) Individual proficiency
A cheerleading routine is made up of a sum of its parts of 24 people. What you can
contribute depends on your individual proficiency. The more that you can do, the better the
routine. Take initiative to master your individual elements early so that by the time routine
planning comes along, you are ready to make the step up. We all have the same amount of
time a day, when you are taking a day off, someone else is working harder. Always
remember that.
3) We are a team
Wildcards has always been a very straightforward and aggressive team, but at the same time
I have enjoyed the best support I could ever get. Be humble and respect your teammates.
On the mats, we can be harsh on each other but off the mats, we are still teammates. Take
the initiative to get to know your teammates rather than waiting for them to get to know
you.
4) Be proactive and hungry
Know what you need to do and do what you need to do in the quickest time possible. Find
your ways to improve, always ask questions and never leave anything for the next training.
Keep this in mind and fight hard as a team. Season 16/17 has already begun. It is not going to be
easy but I am pretty sure we would not have it any other way. We would come back stronger,
together as one team.
Regards,
Winston
With this, thank you for your guidance and coaching this season. Let's all strive hard now and aim for a common goal together as a team.
